Band Hall Expectations & Guidelines
Classroom Procedures
Attitude – It is important that the environment we work in is a positive one that will allow each student to succeed according to their ability. Every student should have a positive approach and a helpful attitude with regard to their band class. This attitude should spill into their other classes and their daily lives.
Listening – Each student should work to be an aggressive listener. Listening is a valuable tool both in the classroom as well as in life. Students should make good eye contact with anyone (director, teacher, parent, etc.) who is addressing them. They should focus on fully understanding each instruction or concept presented to them. If understanding is not reached, they should ask appropriate questions at the appropriate time.
Instructions - Band students will always follow directions the first time they are given.
Asking Questions - Students should remain quiet in class, raise their hand and wait to be acknowledged before speaking. Shouting out creates confusion and can get the class off task. Students should ask pertinent questions at appropriate times.
Respect - Band students will be respectful to others. Always speaking in a courteous tone; keeping hands, feet, and objects to themselves; and allowing a quiet classroom atmosphere at all times.
Before School
When dropping off or picking up your instrument, please be aware of the sectionals in progress and do not disturb the students in those sectionals. Once your instrument is put away, silently head to the cafeteria to wait for 1st period. The school opens at 7AM: Cafeteria Doors and Front Doors will be unlocked at this time.
Beginning of Class
When you walk through the band hall doors, quickly get your materials out and be ready to begin class within two minutes. Please enter the room in a calm manner.
When getting your instrument from your storage locker, take your instrument out of the case, replace the case in the locker, shut the locker door to prevent head injuries, and move to your designated seat.
Band students should play their instruments in class and at band functions only when instructed to do so by a director.
Band Lockers
Instrument storage lockers are to be used for instrumental storage ONLY!! Each student is assigned a specific locker, which is to be kept clean. Instruments are to be put in their cases, and the cases kept closed and latched while in the locker. NO INSTRUMENTS ARE TO BE KEPT IN THE STORAGE LOCKERS OVERNIGHT OR OVER THE WEEKENDS UNLESS THEY ARE ISSUED A SEPARATE SCHOOL OWNED INSTRUMENT FOR HOME USE. SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS WILL BEGIN TO CONSISTENTLY BRING THEIR INSTRUMENTS HOME AS SOON AS THEY ARE INSTRUCTED BY THEIR BAND DIRECTOR.
Instrument lockers are to be locked at all times. The only time the lock may be unlocked is during band class. Students leaving their locker unlocked at any time other than their band class will receive a before or after school detention. This is for the protection of your instrument and supplies. Students playing a school-owned instrument will receive a lock to use. All other students will be required to purchase a combination lock and turn in the combination to the directors. We want to be able to assist student in opening their locker if they forget their combination.
Band Hall
Technology is always set to SILENT mode before entering the band hall or band facilities. (Silence is golden!)
Absolutely NO gum, food, soda or candy is allowed in the band hall or practice room area. It is dangerous to have ANYTHING in your mouth while playing a wind instrument. It is also a sign of respect of the band hall as we are only one of a handful of classrooms with carpet. Only water is allowed inside the band hall.
Only Shadow Ridge Band Students are allowed in the band hall. This is for security and traffic flow concerns. Friends may wait in the main hallway for you. It is the responsibility of the band members to maintain this expectation.
Although the band office is meant for business, it is not off limits to students. When the door is open, students are welcome to enter. When the door is closed, please do not interrupt the work taking place. If you have an emergency, please knock and use common sense in regard to how important your concern may be.
Practice Rooms
The practice room hallway is to be used only by those using the practice rooms or waiting for private lessons. Before and after school, the band hall and practice rooms are areas of work or practice. These areas are NOT visiting areas. Remember, we share these facilities with both the choir and the orchestra.
When using the practice rooms before or after school, only three people will be allowed in the practice rooms at a time. Practice rooms are only for music practice. Homework should be done in the cafeteria.
All band students are encouraged to use the band hall and practice room facilities. Band members are also encouraged to keep these rooms neat and clean. In addition, students should be courteous to any and all Shadow Ridge band, orchestra and choir directors, private lesson teachers and other adults in the practice facilities.
Instrument Care
No one shall hold, play, or otherwise operate or handle another person’s instrument. This is for health reasons as well as instrument repair reasons. IF IT DOESN’T BELONG TO YOU, DON’T TOUCH IT!! EACH BAND STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS/HER OWN INSTRUMENT!
Students are not allowed to leave their instrument unattended at any time. There will be consequences for any student whose instrument is brought to us by another student, teacher, etc. -- whether it is found on or off school property.
***It is suggested that all personal instruments have the proper insurance coverage. Instruments ARE NOT insured by Shadow Ridge Middle School or Lewisville Independent School District, adding your LISD rental instrument on your homeowners policy is encouraged (and fairly cheap).***
Additional Materials
Binders - All band students will be required to keep a black band binder. They will also need a pencil bag, pencils, highlighter, page protectors, and all the accessory items for their instruments as outlined by a band director. Such items as class notes, tests, band rules, and various handouts will be kept in the band binder.
Handouts - We will give out information in the form of handouts. Band students will bring all such correspondence home, and bring it to their parent’s attention. Any correspondence that requires a parent signature should be returned to the band directors promptly.
Uniforms - Band students will show pride in their organization by always wearing their band uniform in a complete and correct manner. Band shirts must be tucked in during performances.
